From 20th to 23rd June 2011, WANACU participated in a 3-day workshop in Sulaimaniyah, Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq. Aim of the workshop which was organized by TU Cottbus and University of Baghdad was to give the young colleagues from Iraq better chances to qualify their international expertise. 26 participants in the fields of architecture, urban planning and civil engineering from the Iraqi universities in Dohuk, Sulaimaniyah and Baghdad joined the workshop. Background of the event was the fact that both the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Iraqi universities offer scholarships for research visits to Germany for young professionals from Iraq. However, it was deemed necessary that in order to make these visits beneficial for each side, it is necessary to dispose the candidates very well before their time in Germany. In coordination with TU Dortmund and TU Berlin and in adjustment with the DAAD, the main organizers decided to run the training workshop. While the German university representatives from Cottbus and Berlin presented their specific qualities, profiles and programs for visiting young professionals, Iraqi participants had the chance to introduce their previous scientific experiences as well as their individual scientific targets and interests which they want to research in Germany.
