Academic Self-Government as an Element of Democratic Universities

The event “Academic Self Government on the Level of Faculties as a Fundamental Element of Democratic Universities” took place at TU Berlin’s Campus El Gouna from 17th and 20th May 2012. Around 35 representatives of Egyptian and German universities participated in the event which was financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The event combined three main ideas: the first one was to carry out the 83rd so-called "Meeting of German Deans of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture" (usually referred to as “DARL”) at the new “Campus El Gouna” of Technische Universität Berlin which is a member university of the DARL. DARL meetings are usually carried out twice a year in Germany and serve as a regular forum for German Deans and heads of departments to discuss issues of common interest and elaborate recommendations for the policies of the schools and faculties. This time, Egyptian colleagues were invited to join the DARL and –the second idea of this event – discuss whether a similar regular meeting could be established in Egypt as well –and in what form. The third idea was to use the opportunity of a meeting of Egyptian and German University representatives from similar fields to have discussions about existing cooperation and possibilities for future joint activities.

The event was seen as a great success by all participants. Some of the Egyptian representatives met in the evenings in order to discuss if similar regular meetings could be established in Egypt as well. In order investigate this issue more in detail and to have further talks about collaboration between the participation universities from both countries, it is planned to invite the Egyptian colleagues to the next official DARL meeting to take place in German in November 2012.
