Oman-German Research Cooperation on Sustainable Settlement Patterns in Oman


High population growth rates, changing life style patterns, increasing wealth and extended streets and highways for private car use, have caused dramatic horizontal growth of the built-up area surrounding the capital city Muscat. The emerging patterns are neither adapted to climatic conditions nor do they comply with basic principles of sustainable urban development.

Research Focus
Habitat Unit, at TU Berlin, is part of the consultancy board and cooperates on specific issues in the research project on “Sustainable Urbanisation Patterns in Oman” feeding in experiences from other regions about driving forces of urbanisation as well as its specific research focus in actors and governance arrangements underlying these processes.
The research project initiated in 2010 and is funded by the Omani Research Council and carried out by GUtech (Prof. Dr. Sonja Nebel Principal Investigator) and Sultan Qaboos University (Prof. Dr. Awni Shabaan Co-Principal Investigator and Prof. Dr. Alaa Mandour, Co-Investigator). 

Linking research and teaching
Furthermore, the cooperation between GUtech and TU Berlin is meant to link research with teaching activities. In November 2010 a joint studio took place in Muscat with architecture, urban design and planning students from both universities. They analysed patterns of urban growth and expansion taking as cases the old core of Al Khould and the new developments at the fringe of Muscat.
