Lupe

The first academic event was carried out TU Berlin’s Campus El Gouna from 6th to 9th May 2012, opening a series of academic events to take place at the Campus before the official opening in October 2012.

The International Symposium “Sustainability for New Neighbourhoods and Buildings - Appropriate Techniques and Technologies“ brought together around 70 participants from Egypt and Germany, among them professors and other experts from different fields and institutions, private sector representatives, invited guests from public institutions such as the German Embassy in Egypt, and Egyptian students. The Symposium focused on three main topics: Planning and Building of Sustainable Urban Quarters and Neighbourhoods, Planning and Building of Sustainable Building, and Vocational Education for High Quality Work on the Building Site. The results of several current research projects based in Germany and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) were presented. In addition, Egyptian experts presented the needs and current practice in Egypt with regards to the main topics. Based on this bilateral exchange, appropriate approached for the development of new neighbourhoods and buildings in Egypt were investigated.

Among these projects was the TU Berlin based project "Young Cities” which is dealing with all three main topics and hence was the focal point of the event.

The Symposium attracted wide interest among the Egyptian participants. As a follow-up, further events to take place at Campus El Gouna, each focusing on particular aspects within the “Young Cities Project“, have already been scheduled for the near future.
